ABELIA

 (Dwarf Pink  Abelia)

The new growth foliage has a reddish color on graceful, slender branches.   Purple-pink flowers  bloom from May-June through  frost . Partially deciduous.  Used for low-maintenance hedge, growing 3-4’ in height. Plant in full sun to partial shade.

Glossy Abelia

A medium to fast growing, dense, multi-stemmed, semi-evergreen spreading shrub.    It prefers well-drained, moist acid soil.  Slightly fragrant white-flushed pink flowers lasts from May-June through frost. At full growth, they may reach  3-6’  by 3-6’.  Full sun to ½ shade.

Sherwood Abelia

Growth habit is more dense and compact than most abelias.  Grows 3 to 3 ½’ high and 4 to 4 ½’ wide.  Small leaves turn purple green in winter.  A good plant for mass plantings.  Sun or partial shade.

Normally used as a groundcover but may be grown as a vine.  A small-leaved evergreen.  Can grown up to 20’ if not pruned or if trimmed will form a dense mat becoming several inches deep.  Heat and drought tolerant.  Seldom produces creamy white, star shaped blooms if left unattended.

Leaves are large glossy dark throughout the season but should be planted in shady areas as the younger leaves left exposed to the hot sun will turn black.   Use under the canopy of large trees and in ground cover plantings, foundation plantings on the north and east side of homes.  Prefers well-drained, moist soils.  Must be planted in shady areas.
