Althea, Rose of Sharon

Medium green foliage in summer, changing to poor yellow in fall, is displayed on upright multi-stemmed densely branched foliage.  Blooms are 2-4” across in various colors.    Does best in moist well-drained soil which have been supplemented with peat moss, leaf mold or compost.  Valuable for late season flowers.   Good hedge or screen.  Deciduous Growing to 10’ high, 6’ wide.  Full sun or partial shade, prefers hot weather.

 

‘Aphrodite’- Single blooms of deep rose-pink with showy deep red eye on short stalks, with heavy textured foliage, blooming June – September. 

 

‘Diana’ – Waxy dark green foliage, large single white blooms that remain open at night blooming for a  long period in summer.

 

‘Minerva’- Lustrous foliage.  Short stalked flowers are  Lavender with traces of pink overcast and prominent dark red eye spot, 4 to 5” in diameter.  Profuse blooming from June to September.

Climbing Hydrangea

Slow-growing shrubby habit until established, then long stems are produced.  This climbing vine clings to surfaces by aerial rootlets.  Blooms are white lace capped.  Fast growing stems 60-80’ long.  Deciduous.  Full to partial sun.

Pee Gee Hydrangea

Fast growing  large upright  shrub with dark green foliage showing a hint of yellow in the fall.  Has large sterile white flowers forming a tight panicle, turning purplish pink and finally brown on panicles 6-8” long forming on new wood in July-September.   It  flowers  best  when  plant is thinned to 5 to 10  primary shoots.   Branches will arch from weight  of flower heads. Prefers moist, well-drained soil.  Sun or partial shade.

Prefers well drained, evenly moist soil. Deciduous.  Rapid grower 3-6’ tall and wide.   Sun or partial shade.
