Leatherleaf Mahonia

Spiny, leathery leaves make this an attractive barrier shrub or specimen. Erect stems hold clusters of fragrant lemon yellow blooms followed by  an attractive power-blue to black grape-like  berry attracting birds in May - June.  This is an exceptional plant for a shady corner of the garden.    Evergreen moderate  growing shrub  6-10’ tall, 4-5’ wide.  Partial sun.

Southern Wax Myrtle

This is a beautiful wispy broadleaf evergreen with glossy olive green leaves.  New growth has ‘Bayberry Candle’ scent.  It tolerates infertile soil but prefers good watering and nutrition.   Makes an excellent screen but if left un-pruned, it will produce an attractive small tree. It grows as much as 5’ per growing season maturing at 10-15’ high and wide  Full to partial sun.

Heavenly Bamboo

New leaves are coppery to purplish red becoming  lacy blue-green leaves on cane-like stems at maturity. The pinkish bud turns to creamy white flowers blooming May-June.  Foliage turns a brilliant red color in fall, accompanied by red berries in September-October and persisting into and through winter. Excellent for narrow spaces, may be used as a screen or for groupings. Prefers moist, fertile soil. Upright evergreen. Grows 6-8’ high, 3 feet wide.   Full  to partial sun.

Star Showers Virginia Creeper

A very attractive vine with variegated leaves predominantly green with white ‘paint splattered’ markings. Foliage turns a colorful pinkish shade in cool weather. Foliage is smaller than species.  Excellent, tough, low-maintenance plant, considered a climbing or trailing vine that clings to walls, trellises, rock piles or other surfaces for a quick cover. Stems grow 20-35’ long. Deciduous.  Full to partial sun.

A rather compact handsome haystack-shaped  shrub.  The leaves are dark green with very little if any change in fall.  It is rather sparse flowering. Prefers moist, well drained soil supplied with organic matter.  Moderate grower  to  4’ high.    Evergreen.     Full sun or light shade.

Red Tip Photinia

This is the most poplar of the photinas.  New foliage explodes with bright bonze-red coloring, maturing to large lustrous dark green leaves.   New leaves coincide with the small white flower starting to emerge in early to mid March.  When plants are young, they appear very open but pruning will encourage basal branching. Flowers have a quite offensive odor.  Basic problems are a fungus that starts out with a spot on the leaves. Good corner plant or screen hedge.  It can be used as  espalier or as a patio tree also.   Moderate to fast grower to 8-12’  high, 8-10’ wide.  Plant in full sun or partial shade.

Dwarf Alberta Spruce

These shrubs grow cone shaped displaying  dense gray-green needles which are soft to the touch. Used for miniature Christmas tree or as a tub plant.  Very dwarf spruce is slow growing of about 2-4” per year,  maturing at 6-8’ tall, 4-5’ wide, larger with age.   Partial sun.

Dwarf Mugo Pine, Swiss Mountain Pine

The most common of the dwarf conifer,  it displays dark green needles on a shrubby habit of broadly spreading branches. Needles often turn yellowish green in winter.    It is great for rock gardens, mass plantings or in groupings with broadleaf plants.  Makes a nice container plant especially at Christmas when space is limited for a Christmas tree. Prefers a deep, moist loam soil.   May be pruned annually to thicken plant and keep as a dwarf.   A slow grower 3-5’ tall, spreads 6-10’.  Full sun or partial shade.

Related to the culinary herbs, this foliage gives off a an aromatic minty fragrance.  Purple flowers bloom in spring with some blooms being pink.  To achieve a bushy shape, this should be pruned back annually.  It prefers well drained, moist soil.  Grows approximately 4 ½’  tall.  Prefers some shelter from direct sun.

This tightly branched evergreen shrub has shiny, deep green foliage with a clean appearance. A Native of Bulgaria, this dark green, narrow-leafed shrub is one of the hardiest of the cherry laurels.  With a glossy foliage on a dense, vase-shaped form, it displays a layered effect, making an excellent low hedge for filtered shade. White fragrant flowers appear in profusion in spring. Evergreen.    Moderately  grows 4-6’ tall, 6-8’ wide.   Filtered sun.
