ILLICIUM

Anise Tree

Habit is upright pyramidal to prominently suckering unless restrained.  Foliage is a handsome olive-green. It will tolerate extremely moist soils but does well in dry situations also. Small yellow-green flowers appear in May-June, virtually unnoticed with no noticeable aroma.   An excellent plant for large foliage mass plantings or used as a screen because of the slightly different color that will blend in with dark green evergreens.  Sun or shade.

Golden Rain Tree

Blue-green leaves appear on this medium-sized, open-branched tree turning yellow in fall.  Long panicles of fragrant flowers are followed by papery, lantern-like pink to red blushed seed pods.  Moderate-growing to 20-30’ high, 25-35’ wide.  Full sun.

Elizabeth Magnolia

This magnolia is a cross between acuminata and denudata.  It has pyramidal habit with tapering buds opening to display the clearest primrose-yellow flowers.  Blooms appear April to mid-May.  It is an excellent tree for large property, golf courses, parks, estates or naturalized areas, growing from 70-85’. Full sun.

This pyramidal form tree  has extremely large lustrous dark green leaves and rich orangish-brown undersides adding to the beauty. It is a dense branching evergreen when young spreading more open with age making it an excellent specimen for a lawn or parkway.  It grows from 60-80’ tall with a 30-50’ spread.   Evergreen.  Full sun.

Dwarf Southern Magnolia

This is a dwarf evergreen Southern Magnolia with smaller  dark green leaves with rusty-brown undersides. The foliage is very a compact narrow form.  It is a heavy bloomer with white flowers appearing early and again late in summer. Moderate grower reaching heights of 20-25’ and a width of 10-15 ft.   Full Sun.

Jane Magnolia

This rounded shrubby plant has flowers that have a reddish-purple outside and white inside. The flowers appear April-May before leaves develop.  It reaches a height of 8-12’ with a similar spread.  Full sun.

Alexander Magnolia

Vigorous growing large deciduous shrub or a small tree producing tulip shaped blooms. The blooms are white inside, purplish-pink outside against a beautiful green foliage. Royal Star Magnolia

Dark green foliage on upright densely branched shrubs in youth, more rounded with age.  Pink fragrant buds open to nearly pure white tepals 3-4” in diameter. Grows 15-20’ high, 10-15’ wide.  Prefers peaty, organic-based soil, endures heat well.  Full sun.

Sweetbay Magnolia or Swamp Magnolia

A medium to fast growing,  narrow leaf magnolia. The leaves are dark green with a distinct silver beneath in summer.  It produces  creamy white lemon-scented flowers 2-3” in diameter, 9-12 petals May-June.  Requires acid soil and grows well in wet and even swampy conditions. . Mature Ht. 20’ (in south) by 10-20’ width.  Shade tolerant.

This variety has more pubescent branches and petioles; often larger, a more tree-like evergreen. It produces creamy white, lemon-scented petals May-June.

Weeping Mulberry

Numerous cascading slender branches covered with bright green leaves drape to the ground.  This is a small deciduous tree, very robust growing but produces no fruit.  Trunk is 6-8’ tall with 8-12’ wide crown.  A fast growing tree usually grafted onto a standard.   Full sun.
